The Struggle Of Meaning In Remediation: Buangtonjam In Illustration And Picture-Story

Abstract

In this survey, examination on the remediation of the written text in the novel Buang Tondjamby Motinggo Boesje to the illustrations by Delsy Sjamsumar and the picture-story by U. Syahbudin, reveal the uses of strategies like hypermediacy and immediacy as a struggle to deliver the meaning. It so happens the meaning is constructed by the contemporary discourse on politics and culture in 1963 and 1978 which makes the Buang Tonjam legend of South Lampung as a representation of an identity politics from an ideology which accepts any condition as the consequences of the choice. The meaning is not in the story, which demands the supporters to sacrifice in the struggle; not on what the identity is, but on the struggle itself.
